Coin Talk is a regular online talk hosted by the Money & Medals Network, presenting different element of numismatics from the basics to the more advanced. Each session will delve into a distinctive facet of numismatics, ranging from fundamental principles to advanced topics. Expect engaging talks lasting 30-40 minutes, with a dedicated Q&A session at the conclusion, allowing our audience to participate actively.

These talks are recorded, forming a valuable resource for MMN members keen on expanding their knowledge of various numismatic subjects.

The theme for this session is 'An Introduction to Third Century Radiate Imitations' by Tasha Fullbrook (Reading University).

Third-century radiate imitations, most commonly known as barbarous radiates, are found in large quantities across Britain and Gaul, yet have not been the focus of much research. This talk explores their production and function, placing them within the wider historical context of the third century AD. It will also examine some of the most common types and how to identify them. Finally, we will briefly discuss how recent chemical analyses reveal these coins to be far more sophisticated than they might initially appear.

Tasha Fullbrook holds a BA in History from Royal Holloway, University of London, and an MA in Classical Art and Archaeology from King’s College London. Her MA dissertation examined Roman housing and social status in Winchester. She has two and a half years of experience working with archaeological artefacts as a Finds Liaison Officer with the Portable Antiquities Scheme in Cornwall, where she developed a particular interest in Roman metal artefacts, particularly Roman numismatics.

She is currently in the final year of her PhD in archaeology at the University of Reading, focusing on late third-century imitative coinage through an interdisciplinary approach that combines archaeological, numismatic, and chemical analysis. She is also part of the wider REMADE project at the University of Reading, which aims to rethink and transform approaches to archaeological metals.
