PRACTICAL SOCIAL INVESTIGATION:

THE BRITISH SOCIAL ATTITUDES 1991 SURVEY DATASET

BSA91.SAV contains a small subset of the variables generated by the 1991 British Social Attitudes Survey carried out by SCPR (since renamed the National Centre for Social Research). Data corresponding to all the respondents are included. The original questions that generated the variables can be found in a copy of the questionnaire in the back of Jowell et al. (1992), or on the Question Bank website (http://qb.soc.surrey.ac.uk/). Some of the variables correspond very closely to (pre-coded) questions, but others are derived variables where, for example, a standard class schema has been used to code information relating to occupations into class categories. (For brief descriptions of the Registrar General's Social Class schema and of Goldthorpe classes see Edgell, 1993). In the dataset, the variable label attached to each variable specifies whether the variable comes from a specific question or is a derived variable (dv).
