Main research interests:

Complex Systems

Especially network theory, dynamical systems defined on graphs. Typical examples of such dynamical networks are genetic transcription networks, metabolic pathways, but also economic or social networks, internet or road traffic, and many other applications.

Mathematical Biology and Systems Biology

The main interest is in applications in Cell Biology, where many complex transport and reaction processes are involved on the sub-cellular level to maintain the function of the cell. There is a strong interest in Microscopy and Image Analysis necessary to obtain and understand data related to cellular transport and reaction processes.

In order to understand the up-scaling process from moleculaes to cells, and finally to populations of cells, and the organisation of tissues, there is a strong interest in Physiologically Stuctured Cell Population Models.

Numerical Analysis

The main interest is in new methods that can be customised for biological transport processes. We are currently developing a simulation framework based on a mesh-free generalised finite element discretisation that is able to solve transport equations on complex domains as they typically appear in Cell Biology. There are in addition many biological application that can only be understood with the help of multi-scale analysis and stochastic processes. Such methods and tools need to be combined with standard transport equations creating new challenges.
