Return to the Table of Contents Administrative/Biographical HistoryThe Amalgamated Engineering Union was formed in 1920 through the Amalgamation of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers and nine other Unions (The Steam Engine Workers, The United Machine Workers, The Smiths and Strikers, The Brassfounder's Society, The North of England Brass Turners, The London Metal Turners, The East of Scotland Brassfounders, The Instrument Makers and the Toolmakers Society). Six more Unions joined the AEU between 1944 and 1965. The Amalgamated Union of Foundry Workers joined the Engineers in 1967 to create the Amalgamated Engineering and Foundry Worker's Union (AEF). In 1970 the Draughtsmen and Allied Technicians Union and the Constructional Engineering Union joined the AEF to form the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers, organised into four seperate sections. The amalgamation was not successful and in 1985 the Technical, Administrative and Supervisory Section (TASS) left the amalgamation. The Union changed its name to the Amalgamated Engineering Union in May 1986. The AEU and the EETPU (Electrician's Union) joined to form the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU) in May 1992. Reference: J.B Jeffreys, The Story of the Engineers (London, 1945.
