Fees and funding

Tuition fees are payable for each year of your course at the start of the academic year, or at the start of your course, if later. Fees will normally rise for each year of your course in line with inflation. They do not stay the same as the year in which you started.

There are a range of funding opportunities offered by the University and the Department.

Masters Funding:

Warwick Taught Masters Scholarship Scheme The Graduate School is delighted to announce that we will be awarding a maximum of 100 Warwick Taught Masters Scholarships to support eligible postgraduate students for entry in 2018/2019. Awards are set at £5,000 per student and available to eligible Home/EU students from under-represented groups who wish to start a postgraduate taught masters course in 2018/2019.

Applications for the Warwick Taught Masters Scholarship Scheme are now open. Value: £5,000 towards tuition fees.

Eligibility: Available to eligible Home/EU students from under-represented groups who wish to start a postgraduate taught masters course in 2018-2019. Please see webpage for full eligibility criteria. Deadline: Thursday 29th March, 16:00hrs.

Postgraduate Loan Scheme- Masters Courses Students applying for taught masters programmes starting in October 2018/19 can apply for a loan of up to £10,280 as a contribution towards course and living costs. Postgraduate Loans have to be paid back. Further information on eligibility and how to apply can be found on the University's Student Funding web pages.

Masters candidates can also apply for the Departmental Bursary scheme, outlined below. 

PhD Funding

University funding opportunities

The Department has a strong record in securing funding for our Postgraduate students. For information on the funding schemes available please see below. Note that application to CADRE and the Chancellor's International Scholarships is via the Joint Postgraduate Admissions and Scholarship Application Form. When completing your application to the University select YES when asked if you wish to be considered for funding and complete the further details required.

Important: Before submitting your application online, please contact the Department directly (via c.c.l.petit@warwick.ac.uk), as we can help you to refine your proposal and maximise your chances of success. The deadline for applications is Friday 19th January 2019. You must contact the Department well in advance of this date for us to be able to help you in your application (at least 4-6 weeks before).

CADRE Scholarships:

The University of Warwick’s Centre for Arts Doctoral Research Excellence (CADRE) will offer up to 13 fully-funded scholarships to the most outstanding Home/EU PhD applicants in the Arts. These include payment of academic fees plus a stipend of approx £14,000 per annum, and run for 3.5 years. For 2018/19 entry, the application deadline is Friday 19 January 2018. PhD students in the first year of their degree are also eligible to apply to this scheme. Please see the guidance notes on the CADRE page for more details.

Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships

The University of Warwick are proud to be offering three Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships in the Humanities for entry in the 2018/19 academic year.

The scholarships are available for doctoral research only, for a duration of three years, and in three disciplines that align closely with the Foundation's interests: history, literature, and languages.

Fee status: Home/EU

Value: £28,000 per annum to cover full fees, maintenance stipend, research and training costs.

Applicants from Italy and Greece: please contact the Department for further guidance on sources of funding

International students

Chancellor's International Scholarships are made available for most outstanding international PhD applicants. Awards made for entry in Autumn 2018 include

  1. Full payment of overseas tuition fees
  2. Maintenance stipend in line with RCUK rates.
  3. Last for 3.5 years.

Eligibility: Applicants for a Chancellor's International Scholarship must also be applying for a PhD at the University of Warwick to begin in October 2018. Applicants must expect to be 'overseas' students for fees purposes, but there is no other nationality criteria. Deadline: Friday 19 January 2018.

The University offers some fees awards for taught MA and MA by Research degrees for international students. If you would like to be nominated for one of these, please contact us. Further details on funding is available on the Warwick Graduate School's Funding pages, and the International Office.

Departmental bursaries and financial support

The Department of Classics and Ancient History offers a number of fees awards for MA or PhD study.

How to apply

In order to be considered you must first submit an application for postgraduate study to the University (apply via this online form). PhD applications are also required to apply to the University's funding schemes (deadline 19 January 2018). Applicants who miss this deadline may make an application for Departmental funding, and if successful would be required to apply again to the University funding schemes during their first year of study.

PhD students who have already enrolled on their degrees are eligible to apply for Departmental fees awards, but any award will only be granted for one year: you would need to reapply in subsequent years.
