RESEARCHING THE RESEARCHERS: KEY ISSUES FROM THE QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

In March 1998, the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council (SHEFC) commissioned Warwick University’s Institute for Employment Research (IER) to carry out a panel study encompassing all contract researchers employed within Scottish Higher Education Institutions (SHEIs). A survey of contract researchers in post in March/April 1998 has already been conducted and results from the initial analysis were published in the first ARCS Bulletin (March 1999). A follow-up survey of this group will take place in the summer of 2000. Meanwhile, information about career changes is being collected throughout the two year duration of the study, and a series of in-depth interviews have been undertaken with contract research staff at institutions around Scotland. It is the information collected in these interviews which forms the subject of this second ARCS Bulletin.
