Ladies Benevolent Society
Founded in Lexington in 1821
Lexington Orphan Asylum
Founded in 1833 to care for children orphaned by a cholera epidemic. It
was located in Third Street.
Orphan Society of Lexington
Formed in 1833 to operate the Lexington Orphan Asylum.
It was managed by 24 women drawn from the various protestant churhces in the
city. Frist officers elected October 16, 1833 were Abby V. Sayre (1st directress),
Syna Richardson (2nd directress), Maria C. Gratz (secretary and wife of Benjamin
Gratz, the moving force behind the society) and Sarah Ward (treasurer). Incorporated
1834.
