Aims

The major aim of the EngD is to develop engineers who are capable of demonstrating innovation in the application of knowledge to the engineering business. To this end, it develops and tests participants in a range of compentencies:-

  • expert knowledge of an engineering area,
  • the appreciation of industrial engineering and development culture,
  • project and programme management skills,
  • teamwork and leadership skills,
  • oral and written communication skills,
  • technical organisation skills,
  • financial engineering, project planning and control,
  • the ability to apply his or her skills, and knowledge to new and unusual situations,
  • the ability to seek optimal, viable solutions to multi-faceted engineering problems and to search out relevant information sources.

Meeting the Aims

The requirements of the EngD and the competencies are met primarily through project work which may consist of one or more significant projects. These can cover a wide range of topics from manufacturing management to technology development. However it is important that the projects have the potential for innovation and are of significance to the business.

Additional and supporting competencies are developed by a taught element of the programme. Participants take a number of residential modules which are available through the Warwick Engineering Business Management Masters Programme. As with the Masters Programme, there is an assessed post-module assignment.
