Welcome to ‘A Different Reality

‘A Different Reality’ is a Heritage Lottery funded project on the history of British urban disturbances involving minority ethnic groups since 1980. The project seeks to highlight the progress of Black and Asian people in establishing their communities through the changing response of the state and society to their demands for fair treatment. It includes coverage of those disturbances which took place in Brixton, Southall, Toxteth, Handsworth and Broadwater Farm.

This web site contains a searchable database of citations to local, national and ethnic press cuttings, books, reports, ephemera, videos and journal articles. It also contains a timeline of the events. Professor John Rex has contributed a series of papers which analyse the disturbances and the consequences of these for discussion of racial attacks and institutional racism at the end of the twentieth century.
